Gorilla is one of the newest tents on the market with a new set of gimmicks. We aren’t so impressed. The canvas used is the thickest on the market, 1380D, so thick, that we cannot figure out why it is being used. It is heavier than it needs to be. One immediate falsity that hits us square in the face is that 1380D canvas will stop odors more than other canvas. Wrong.
As we stated at the top, ALL tent canvas currently being made has a layer of plastic on the inside, some is reflective silver and some is white, but all is plastic. Plastic is impermeable in terms of smell, so having a canvas that is 3x thicker and then making a claim that it keeps the smell down is beyond the realm of sane. The plastic layer on the inside of the canvas blocks the smell regardless of how thick the canvas to which it is adhered is claimed to be.
The poles have a common 0.8mm wall thickness and are not galvanized. The tents are well apportioned, strong corners, normal vents etc. but the Gorilla has a an expanding frame that allows the user to raise the tent ceiling about one foot. This may come in handy if using the tent in a warehouse where you can get an extra foot of head room in which to grow. In a house, there would be no point in having this feature as most rooms in the USA are at a standard 8 feet tall.
While the Gorilla claims to be better built in a multitude of areas, we don’t find any of this information critical because the Gorilla falls into the same category as the rest of the tents when comparing vents, or zippers, or reflectivity, or finished edges and sewing.
The thick frame on the larger Gorilla tents is nice but not as thick (20% less) than the Hydrohut and the Gorilla frame design is poor as compared to the Hydrohut Estate with no vertical pole coming down in the middle of the tent. Again, this vertical pole restricts critical movement inside the tent when filled with tables or plants.
